Nishi Park, Fukuoka

last update: March 28, 2026

Nishi Park (西公園) is one of the most pleasant scenic parks in Fukuoka. It sits on a hill between Ohori Park and the coastal area of Momochi, offering open views over Hakata Bay. Compared to nearby Ohori Park, it is less visited by tourists but is popular among locals for walks and enjoying the scenery. Although it is not one of the city’s main attractions, it is worth including in your itinerary if you enjoy scenic places surrounded by nature and relatively quiet areas. During the cherry blossom season in April, however, it becomes one of the best places in Fukuoka for hanami, turning very popular and well worth a visit.

Things to see and things to do in Nishi Park

The park develops along a road that climbs to the top of the hill and crosses an area rich in trees. Outside the circular road that runs through the park there is also a preserved natural forest, especially in the western half, with trees such as pine, castanopsis, and oak.

Along the route there are several viewpoints from which you can observe the sea, the port, and in the distance some of the islands in the bay. Thanks to its elevated position, Nishi Park is also one of the places in the city where you can enjoy the sunset. As it is an open area without strict closing hours, in theory you can also come up here after sunset.

Inside the park you will also find Terumo Shrine, a Shinto shrine dedicated to the Kuroda clan, the former feudal lords who ruled Fukuoka during the Edo period and built the nearby Fukuoka Castle. The shrine stands near the top of the hill and is preceded by a staircase and several large torii gates.

Nishi Park is particularly famous in spring as one of the best places in the city for cherry blossom viewing. It is included in the list of the 100 best places in Japan to see cherry blossoms. About 1,000 sakura trees grow inside the park, attracting many locals during the hanami season. From the viewpoints near the top you can enjoy the cherry blossoms with the sea in the background.

Where to Eat in Nishi Park

Food options inside Nishi Park are limited. There are a few drink vending machines in the park, useful if you want to take a short break during the climb or while exploring the area.

The only proper restaurant inside the park is Ugumitei, located near the top of the hill. The restaurant is known for its view over Hakata Bay and becomes particularly popular during the cherry blossom season. The menu offers simple Japanese dishes such as set meals and noodles.

How to Get to Nishi Park and how to get around

Nishi Park is about a 20-minute walk from Ohori Park. The nearest subway station is Ohori Koen Station on the Airport Line. Alternatively, you can reach the area by city buses that stop on the streets at the base of the hill (from Hakata Station the main lines are 306 and 301).

If you prefer not to walk uphill, it is also possible to reach the upper part of the park by car or taxi. This way you can arrive directly near the viewpoints without much effort.

The map shows how the park is organized around a one-way circular road that climbs to the top of the hill, with several parking areas near the viewpoints. On foot, you can enter the park and start the climb from several points along the perimeter, using roads or paths that gradually lead toward the top. One of the most commonly used routes begins near Terumo Shrine. There are also several secondary trails throughout the park that cross the forest and lead to smaller, less visited viewpoints. If you arrive from below on foot, you can simply follow the uphill road to the shrine and then descend using a different path to explore more parts of the park.
