Hakata Port: the port area of Fukuoka

last update: March 08, 2026

The Hakata Port area is the main arrival point for travelers reaching Fukuoka by ship. The port is an important hub for cruise ships and also an international ferry terminal with regular connections to Busan in South Korea. The port area offers a pleasant waterfront promenade and several attractions, including the iconic Hakata Port Tower, an observation tower with views over the bay. The port is also close to the city center: the lively district of Nakasu, famous for its restaurants and nightlife, can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot or in just a few minutes by taxi or bus. Even travelers with only a few hours during a cruise stop can easily combine a visit to the port with a quick exploration of central Fukuoka.

Things to see and things to do in Hakata Port

The Hakata Port area is not among the most touristic parts of Fukuoka, but it still offers a few interesting attractions for travelers who have some time available or for those arriving in the city by sea. Here you can find a free observation tower, a seaside shopping complex, a modern onsen, and also the Fukuoka International Center, which hosts the city’s annual sumo tournament in November. It is a quiet area that can easily be explored in half a day and is ideal for a relaxed walk or a stop before boarding a ferry or a cruise.

Bayside Place Hakata

Bayside Place Hakata is a seaside shopping complex connected to the domestic passenger terminal of Hakata Port, from which ferries and hydrofoils depart to several nearby islands. Inside there are restaurants, souvenir shops, a supermarket selling local products (Wangan Ichiba), and a small free aquarium located right at the entrance. The complex stands next to Hakata Port Tower. The cruise ship terminal and the ferry terminal for South Korea (Busan) are both within a short walking distance. The area is popular with travelers, especially Korean tourists, and is a convenient place for a short stop before or after a crossing.

Hakata Port Tower is an observation tower built in 1964 and designed by architect Naitō Tachu, famous for designing several towers in Japan, including the iconic Tokyo Tower. The structure is 100 meters tall and features a free observation deck located at about 70 meters above ground, offering views over the harbor and the city of Fukuoka. At the base of the tower there is also a small museum (Hakata Port Bayside Museum) dedicated to the history of Fukuoka’s port, which is also free to enter.

Namiha no Yu Onsen

Namiha no Yu is a modern onsen complex located next to Hakata Port Tower, within walking distance from the port terminals. It is a good place to relax after a day of sightseeing or before boarding a ferry. The facility includes a variety of indoor and outdoor baths, a stone sauna, and private baths that can be reserved on site. Inside the complex there is also a restaurant, massage services, and relaxation areas. Admission costs 1100¥ on weekdays and 1250¥ on weekends and holidays for adults; children (up to 3 years old) pay 500¥. Access to the stone sauna requires an additional fee, as do private baths. Soap and shampoo are provided free of charge, while towels can be purchased separately (300–400¥) if you do not bring your own.

Fukuoka International Center

The Fukuoka International Center (Fukuoka Kokusai Center) is a multifunction arena located in the Hakata port area. It is well known throughout Japan for hosting the prestigious Fukuoka sumo tournament (Kyushu Basho) every November, one of the six official tournaments in the national sumo calendar. For about two weeks the arena fills with fans and visitors from across Japan and abroad, offering a rare opportunity to watch this traditional sport up close. Besides sumo, the venue also hosts concerts, trade fairs, and other sporting events throughout the year. If you are in Fukuoka, check the Kokusai Center event calendar.

Where to Stay in Hakata Port, recommended hotels

In general, we do not recommend staying in the Hakata port area, especially for travelers visiting Fukuoka for tourism. The area is quiet but somewhat isolated, with limited dining options and almost no nightlife, and the number of available hotels is very small. It is much better to stay in a more central area such as Hakata Station or Tenjin, which offer better transport connections and many more accommodation options. That said, if for specific reasons (for example early morning ferries or late arrivals) you need to stay near the port, the most practical options are the Hotel Hakata Place, a simple but functional business hotel, or the Fukuoka Guesthouse CAMP, a hostel-style accommodation with inexpensive dormitory beds.

Where to eat in Hakata Port, Fukuoka

Inside the Bayside Place Hakata complex there are several restaurants. Apart from that, there are not many dining options in the immediate area. We recommend Rita Farm, an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant (open only for lunch) that uses high-quality ingredients without additives or preservatives (2200¥ per person). Although it is located a bit farther from the ferry terminal, we also recommend visiting the Nagahama Fish Market and, nearby, the sushi restaurant Mawaru Sushi Ichiba, which is very popular among locals.

Nagahama Fish Market

The Nagahama Fish Market is the main seafood market of Fukuoka, located about a 20-minute walk from Hakata Port. Although access to the wholesale market is usually restricted to industry professionals, the public can visit it during the Citizen Appreciation Day, held on the second Saturday of each month (more information on the official website). On these occasions visitors can watch tuna cutting demonstrations and buy fresh seafood at discounted prices. Inside the complex there is also a dining area open to the public offering a selection of dishes made with fish coming directly from the market. The restaurants open early in the morning and close in the early afternoon.

How to Get to Hakata Port, all transportation options

Hakata Port is not directly served by the subway or railway lines, but it is still located close to the city center. The nearest subway station is Gofukumachi (Hakozaki Line), about a 20–25 minute walk away. A similar walking time applies if you start from the Nakasu area. It is also possible to walk to JR Hakata Station in about 45–50 minutes, crossing much of the city center.

Several bus lines serve the port area. From Hakata Station, bus line 88 runs directly to Bayside Place Hakata and the port passenger terminal in about 10–15 minutes. From the Tenjin area, bus line 80 provides a similar connection with comparable travel times.

Alternatively, a taxi from the city center (Hakata or Tenjin) takes less than 10 minutes, making it a convenient option if you are traveling with luggage or in a group.
