The airport is located east of the city center, about 2–3 km from Hakata, the main transportation hub, and about 10 minutes by subway from Tenjin. It consists of two separate terminals: the International Terminal, used for international flights, and the Domestic Terminal, used for domestic flights. The two terminals are on opposite sides of the runway and are about 5 km apart. It is not possible to walk between them, and you must use a frequent free shuttle bus.
The best way to travel between the airport and the city center is the subway.
From the Domestic Terminal, you can directly access Fukuoka Airport Station (Kuko Line). From here, you can reach Hakata in just 5 minutes and Tenjin in 10 minutes. The fare is very low (about 260¥ to Hakata and slightly more to Tenjin), and trains run frequently.
From the International Terminal, you first need to take the free shuttle bus, which will bring you to the domestic terminal in about 10–15 minutes, where you can access the subway.
From the International Terminal, there are also direct buses to various areas of the city, without needing to take the shuttle. The cost is slightly higher than the subway but still affordable. This option is especially convenient if you have large luggage and want to avoid transfers. You can reach Hakata Station in about 15–20 minutes and Tenjin in 25–30 minutes.
Taxis are easily available outside the terminals and are a convenient option, especially at night or if you have a lot of luggage. Compared to other Japanese cities, fares are relatively reasonable due to the short distance (about 1,500–2,500¥ depending on your destination).
If you arrive on an international flight and want to use the subway, you will need to take the free shuttle bus that connects the two terminals. The shuttle is well signposted and easy to find outside the international terminal. It runs very frequently, every 5–10 minutes, and the journey takes about 10–15 minutes.
